Grumpy Bear wikia

Grumpy, like all the Care Bears and cousins, were orphans, taken into the care and custody of Noble Heart Horse and True Heart Bear. When they were young they were chased by an evil entity Dark Heart. Noble Heart and True Heart tried bravely to defend the baby cubs and cousins, sailing and running from place to place in order to keep ahead of Dark Heart, but he always found them. Their actions were noticed by the Great Wishing Star, who realized that the two, in trying to take care of the orphaned cubs and battle Dark Heart, were the most caring individuals and created the Kingdom of Caring, raising the boat they were on up to it for safety and granting the two their tummy symbols/belly badges.

In the Kingdom of Caring, they were finally able to raise the cubs in a semblance of peace, but only for a while. Soon Dark Heart was able to find them too and for the safety of the infants they separated. The Cousins went to the Forest of Feelings with Noble Heart Horse, and the Cubs went to Care-A-Lot with True Heart Bear. Even as a baby, Grumpy didn’t have it easy. He was always fussy, crying and really had the worst of luck.

Growing up, however, he learned to master his abilities as a Care Bear and take on more responsibility, going on Caring missions to the world below on Earth, or helping out in Care-A-Lot.

One day, one of Grumpy’s new inventions, the Rainbow Rescue Beam, gets tinkered with by two baby cubs, and sends two Care Bears and two kids mistakenly to the Forest of Feelings instead of down to Earth. With the Caring Meter dropping dangerously low, they have no choice but to try and find their lost comrades before they’re able to all go down to Earth to help. There they reunite with the lost Cousins. The rest of the Care Bears and Cousin’s head to Earth in order to battle an evil spirit from corrupting a young boy and spreading malice. Grumpy and Good Luck Bear stay behind to fix the Rainbow Rescue Beam, as Care-A-Lot crumbles, their home directly linked to the amount of caring in the world. As less people care, the more quakes and damage Care-A-Lot is subjected to. If the Caring Meter drops to zero, no one in the world will care and Care-A-Lot will be destroyed. Running out of time, and knowing they’ll need the machine if they’re too succeed, Grumpy and Wish eventually succeed in fixing it and head down to Earth to help with the final battle against the spirit. They succeed in sealing the spirit back in it’s book, and freeing the young boy from it’s hold, restoring caring to the world.

They’re put to a test again when Dark Heart finds them, and Caring again starts dropping. With Noble Heart and True Heart mistakenly chasing Dark Heart’s shadow, it’s up to the bears and cousins to help. Dark Heart, however, has been busy and has already started to capture some of the bears. Even with so few remaining, the Bears and Cousins, including Grumpy, go down to try and help, but it’s not enough. All the Bears and Cousins are captured, including Grumpy, after he unsuccessfully tries to lift a prison key from around Dark Heart’s sleeping neck. He’s caught and they fail. They’re all only saved when a girl, formerly under Dark Heart’s spell, tries to save them and dies, caught in one of his blasts. The bears are released and with enough caring, the girl is revived. Dark Heart faces redemption and the day is saved.

In more recent years, Grumpy has moved out of his home in Care-A-Lot, instead of hoping for living out of his van, which has more than enough for his needs. He still goes on Caring Missions, although more and more the Care Bears opt to bring the kids in need up to Care-A-Lot instead of going down to earth like they used to, and helps look after and raise the various cubs in the Kingdom.

Personality:

Grumpy’s personality has changed as he’s gotten older (and as the series has changed hands and the character got redefined). While he used to be more extroverted and friendly, and grumping only on occasion, he’s grown more surly as the years went on.

In contrast to the other Care Bears, Grumpy can be kind of a jerk. While he does fill a niche within the Kingdom of Caring, helping kids realize it’s okay to be sad once in awhile and acknowledge the non-positive emotions they’re feeling, he’s pretty grumpy. All the time. In fact he’s the only bear in Care-A-Lot to embody a negative emotion. He’s sadness, surliness, cynicism and sarcasm. Unlike the rest of the Care Bears, he’s actually really antisocial. While he does enjoy being with people (and bears) every once in awhile, it’s not his ideal state. He’d much rather be working on something (alone and enjoy the peace and quiet), or kicking back while watching TV with a sweet spread of goodies he’s made on his grill.

Still, underneath his surly, aggressive attitude and screw you personality, he actually does care. It’s more of a tough love type of caring. He’s not one to sugar coat the truth or beat around the bush. He tell’s the situation as it is. He feels it’s better to be direct than to try and not hurt someone’s feelings. Down the line their feelings will eventually be hurt, so might as well spare the time and skip the dancing and get right down to business. He’ll always be there if you need him. Within reason. Like not when he’s watching a sports game or in the middle of another project. He’s totally not going to drop everything to help you unless it’s an emergency. And even then, he’ll bitch about it. He’s a giant complainer. But, Grumpy’s also dependable and reliable. Usually, someone will need him to build or fix something, and he’ll always be there if someone needs to grump and bitch and sulk.

Despite his attitude, Grumpy is actually pretty good with children, and baby cubs. His antisocial bitchiness tends to be endearing, as long as he’s not pushed overboard and gets his alone time. He’s a fierce advocate that there is nothing wrong with wallowing. Sometimes life just sucks and acknowledging that is healthy. Grumpy will argue this perspective with the other Care Bears and their positive, extroverted outlooks.

Still, he’s not a grump all the time. He has bouts of chipperness and glee, and generally really enjoys life. At times he pretends to be grumpy and bitter because that’s what is expected of him, and everyone gets so shocked when he’s actually happy and enjoying himself. He’s been known to break into a dance, be happy and smile, and if he’s in a mood, hope that no one was paying attention. If he’s caught in a good mood, he might actually smile at someone willingly. Grumpy encompasses ‘everything in moderation’, unlike the other members of his family who are extroversion and cheer all the time.

He also has a tendency to laser focus when he’s involved in something. Grumpy could be so busy building that he doesn’t notice the obvious around him. At times he can be downright mischievous, like stealing ice cream in the middle of a caring mission because the other bears have Important Things To Do and the ice cream can’t go to waste. Food is important to him. Very important. The easiest way to piss him off is to take his food or interrupt him in the middle of eating. Often Grumpy will think with his stomach and lets his emotions get the better of him, like when he tried to have some alone time and watch a sports game on his TV, and every bear came to watch with him, invading his precious alone time, eating his carefully prepared food and making him miss an important part of the game. Rather than enjoy that others wanted to spend time with him, doing something he enjoyed, and speaking up for himself when he felt that his generosity was being taken advantage of, he bitched and groaned inwardly until he emotionally exploded, along with his Belly Badge. His grumpiness infected all of Care-A-Lot and in turn he had to be chipper and happy in order to reverse it and get everyone back to their old selves. All of that could have been avoided if he didn’t tent to bitch and grump and not let anyone else in.

Grumpy, as a Care Bear, is of course the embodiment of grumpiness and sadness. He’s surly, and kind of a jackass at times when others are trying to be nice and friendly. He’s antisocial, perpetually pissed off and wants everything done his way. If he doesn’t get his alone time or his food gets taken he becomes positively jerky. He’s cynical in contrast to the others optimism. Grumpy also has trouble sharing, cheats when he feels like it, which is a lot of the time, and thinks that rules are sometimes better as guidelines. At one point he takes a shortcut, which has been closed as the road is actually dangerous, in order to steal a hive full of honey. In trying to push his truck out of the quicksand it got lodged in(see: dangerous road, do not enter), he gets stuck himself and he’s forced to wait for help. That is before the bees, angry that their hive was stolen, come for revenge. Thanks Grumpy. Next time maybe don’t steal a bee hive, and ignore road signs, jackass.

Inventory: his blanket. He was totally sleeping.
Abilities/Powers:

Care Bear Stare: This is a ray of positive caring energy that emanates from his rain cloud badge/symbol. It can be healing if someone’s been affected by a spell or negative emotions or can be used as a self defense mechanism.

Weather manipulation: due to the rain cloud on his tummy symbol/belly badge, he can create thunderstorms, windstorms, rain clouds or regular clouds, in mini or larger forms. They are projected from his symbol and then physically manifest in front of him, or moved to the location needed. Larger forms obviously take a lot more power and cannot be maintained for long periods of time. He can do this willingly or when he gets too surly, he’ll lose control of these abilities, usually in mini form with a cloud above his head. However, it has been shown that the more irritated he is, the larger the storm.

Beacon: He can shine his symbol into the sky as a beacon, a cry for help or to gather others. Kind of like the bat symbol. But for Care Bears.

Rainbows: He can create a rainbow, focusing positive emotions out of his cloud symbol.

Engineering:Grumpy is a good engineer, he likes building things. He’s built most of the inventions and gizmos around Care-A-Lot. Unlike his engineering counterpart in the Cousins, Brightheart Raccoon, Grumpy is old fashioned. He doesn’t care about LED lights or touchpads or really fast wifi speeds. He’s perfectly fine with simple things and tools like a regular old hammer and nail and his work reflects that. It’s not inventive or new and shiny but it is sturdy and reliable. Ask for a roof, he’ll build you a roof, not a new shiny roof with LED flashing lights, new weather sensing adaptable technology and a Smart refrigerator. In recent years he has grown, and has hooked up his ancient 30 year old television set to a solar panel, but that’s as ‘new fangled’ as he gets. And no, he doesn’t want a new television set, thanks. He likes the knobs and antenna on this one. It works fine.

Cooking:Grumpy’s a great griller. You definitely want him at your next tailgating party. He can bake too, and while he doesn’t follow a recipe and his cookies come out looking like something out of a landfill, they’ll taste great.

Driving: Grumpy’s the only one in the Kingdom of Caring who drives a stick shift.
